Karl's Story: The Path to Freedom from Alcohol
My name is Karel. I started drinking more than normal 13 years ago. It was a combination of stress from business, the economic crisis, and the loss of my father.
Depression drove me to drinking all day. I was nervous, aggressive, but I kept telling myself that I wasn't an alcoholic. After all, everyone drinks.
When my health began to fail, I had to make a decision. I chose the NEO Center. There I found a regular regimen, groups, and therapies that opened my eyes. For the first time, I talked about my life and my addiction. After four weeks, I left a new person.
I have been sober for two years now. My family and business have stabilized. I thank NEO Center for a life without alcohol.
Do you need help?NEO Center's expert director, clinical psychologist and psychotherapist Kateřina Marklová on Karel's story
Does a person need to realize that they have a problem with alcohol, otherwise it will not lead to a cure?
Yes, without admitting that I have a specific problem, in this case alcohol addiction, I am unable to receive adequate help. Recognizing the problem is always necessary for targeted help.
How does the NEO Center work with a person who comes in and says they have a problem...
For us, motivation for treatment, for change, is important, and that's where we start. First, we focus on understanding the situation, why this problem has developed in me (i.e. alcoholism), and then we develop the competencies of what changes in life I can make to improve my condition overall.
What is important in the healing process to make it successful?
The client's desire for change. We are talking about an internal commitment to work on oneself. It is not possible without mutual cooperation between the client and the therapist. Sobriety needs to be worked on continuously throughout life.
