Workaholism

Workaholism occurs when work becomes the major theme in one’s life at the expense of other more or equally important things. Under such conditions one may ultimately harm or lose not only one’s hobbies and other interests but also one’s very social life and home lifefriends and loved ones. Workaholism can occur in various forms; for example, a growing and seemingly unstoppable mental obsession with work responsibilities, no matter whether one is at work or outside of it. The condition may threaten a person who holds an overly demanding job or one that comes with high levels of responsibility or other stress-inducing conditions. It may plague a person who, for whatever reason, has come to identify almost exclusively with who they areor the title that they holdat work.

What are the symptoms of Workaholism?

It can be difficult to distinguish workaholism from a regular passion for work. However, as with other forms of addiction, certain withdrawal conditions will signal the problem. Such symptoms for a workaholic can be discomfort and distraction and even a heightened feeling of stress at times when it is not possible to work. Over time, there is a worsening of mental and physical effects (e.g., excessive fatigue, growing feelings of emptiness, general deterioration of one’s interpersonal relationships). There are other symptoms as well. The syndrome known as burn-out can be a later symptom of workaholism.

Treatment of Workaholism

Preventive measures are the ideal solution for the workaholic. If you feel that the problems associated with workaholism affect you in any way, you may consult us about it. Together we will look for your best solution. The treatment for workaholism consists mainly in engaging in psychotherapy and implementing recommended lifestyle adjustments, discovering new values (or rediscovering earlier values), and finding new ways to prioritise those healthy values and hobby / relationship preferences.  This therapy can help one to recognize how to achieve professional goals as part of a rich life tapestry rather than at the expense of all else in life.

At NEO Centrum, your inquiries are treated with utmost confidentiality. We treat each of our clients completely individually and take measures to protect our clients’ privacy throughout any treatment process. Starting with our first one-on-one consultation, we carefully evaluate a client’s condition and offer a treatment plan tailored to their specific needs and condition. In the fight against an addiction to workaholism, we offer both outpatient and resident treatment. However, before agreeing on a form of cooperation, we discuss in depth with the prospective client the nature of their problem and what best course treatment can NEO Centrum offer to the client.

The NEO Centrum program includes group and individual therapy and also relapse prevention. Group therapy provides an environment for sharing problems, emotions and thoughts with others who are also in treatment, giving the client insight as well as feedback on their own behavior. As part of the treatment, clients with different addictions may be encouraged to interact. All addictions have common elements and in our experience it is beneficial for clients to work with them together.
